The play described is more of what we call "bluff", where the TE is mimicking the action on split, while instead bypassing the read player and going to the second level to get the weakside backer or a DB. The QB would then read the end man or the 5 tech and either give it or pull it based on the 5 techs post snap read. Clemson employed this play many times in the National Championship.
