Film Review: Michigan at Nebraska, 2021, Part 2
I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from an execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan at Nebraska football game. Due to length, it has been broken into two parts.
Breakdown Continued
Nice opening call from option series. Flood, but Michigan ready with coverage. Now, knock down makes it null, but receivers can help QB with route adjustments pic.twitter.com/ebPXvJS0mR
Pop pass off insert look pic.twitter.com/AuldHd67i4

By the way, this is called a Creeper pressure. A non-traditional rusher from a traditional position (i.e. not walked up) replaces a traditional pass rusher, who drops into coverage

Pre snap strength shift. Going to come back to pass coming up at some point pic.twitter.com/ubGnUM6had

Michigan’s first slow screen of the year I think. Well set up, poorly blocked. Great hustle from the backside to hold down what is otherwise probably a big gain even with the blocking errors pic.twitter.com/S2UEfO92o4

LB gets stuck in his pre snap gap and then loses leverage, which is exactly why you run this play (and Split OZ isn’t terribly common, so all the OL flow makes it hard to ID) pic.twitter.com/hu8KIIEvUJ

First look at old school dive and pitch key triple option. See some hesitation from Michigan D pic.twitter.com/WLCe7U6YmN

This single play may be the biggest indictment. They botched this same handoff on this same play vs MSU pic.twitter.com/5NLD3HAEbE

Trying to sequence the Q crack sweep, Michigan not fooled pic.twitter.com/I8LjztRK2R

First time I recall pairing the short jet motion with single back Power pic.twitter.com/dqHfqjDaVu

Michigan completely confused in short yardage. RB saves them pic.twitter.com/JDjJWkzysF

Michigan runs a lot of subtle tendency breakers. Here is one of those. Catches Nebraska 2nd and 3rd level thinking pass and their DTs really save the day pic.twitter.com/mXqneCqerk

We’ve seen this before. TD near the goal line on this RPO look pic.twitter.com/gZdMP1Bnts

Per analytics, going for 2 up 12 with ~3 min in the 3rd was the right call, and matches reality. Lower scoring game, two teams that use clock. Likely 3-4 more possessions left each, you’re likely to score at least a FG more. Getting game to 14 a little more valuable than TD-FG-FG

Back to the swing RPO. OL still getting beat up whenever there is a single block pic.twitter.com/AoaHqkR1Sb

Formation, motion, play, I don’t want to play man against this throw back pic.twitter.com/iRFOFMrnbO

Orbit return TD vs man. Couple great calls from Frost now.

Roll 2 and Michigan has the right play dialed up. Missed chance pic.twitter.com/l2NtcgHo1a

Second TE delay conversion. Look out for the bender though… pic.twitter.com/zjTpKLunSm

Another RPO, but bang 8 open here if he’s a touch more patient with his read pic.twitter.com/jNHaKldFM2

Sweep again with an explosive. Michigan runs a bunch of gap schemes, so that end is forming up for something coming back his way. Nothing does, play gets outside, two defenders in the same gap, TD pic.twitter.com/fb1nYVs0lO

Freeze Load Speed Option. Poor job on the outside and crazy pitch relation pic.twitter.com/tR89SSFk35

Post wheel. Michigan does everything you’re supposed to except finish the play pic.twitter.com/g4cLxTIi5B

Alright guys, trap pass is hard enough to defend. Don’t need giants making these kinds of catches along with it pic.twitter.com/ko3T5fLq7z

Insert Zone with the swing RPO. Vs 2-high get a major advantage in the box pic.twitter.com/DzW4nkDkdi

Very good example of being patient with your fall back technique. Both combos fail to come off to the second level, front side because the angle significantly changed, backside because the front side on the combo came off pic.twitter.com/QkuaSK4yxO

Best blocked run play of the day. Just as you draw it up pic.twitter.com/gIhLka2XMJ

Great hands by the DT here to get quick pressure pic.twitter.com/46okeanuzq

Last of the Y Delay. 3/3 on 3rd and Long conversions on this concept. This time from a new formation pic.twitter.com/Ve5gAq3qjG

Watch the DE here. Spikes inside but then able to change his momentum, scrape back a gap, and prevent what is otherwise probably a big play. pic.twitter.com/Guh36DyP7T

Wasn’t a fan of this call live, still don’t prefer it, but two guys make great defensive plays on what would otherwise probably be a TD pic.twitter.com/Jmv65habQA

Really nice route here pic.twitter.com/VT5vFTJvpJ

Highlighting this Pass-Pass Option (PPO) because you don’t see it often in B1G. People hate the name because every pass is a “pass pass option”, but idea is you have a quick hitting route on the backside of a later breaking concept (hitch backside of rollout flood here) pic.twitter.com/XADCgQXvTX
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) October 21, 2021
Ni pressure fire zone. Pressure gets home, right decision to throw hot, but fading from pressure results in bad throw. Need to clean up eyes on defense and communication pic.twitter.com/pfjJZS0Yr1
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) October 21, 2021
We’ll set up screen. DL doesn’t feel it and retrace well enough here and there is a convoy. Ball has too much loft into the sideline though and the CB makes a hell of a play pic.twitter.com/W8dIMzAgpD
