Film Review: Michigan vs Georgia, CFP Semi-Final, 2021 Season - Part 1
I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from and execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan vs Georgia CFP semi-final game.
First play, Georgia vs Michigan. Single back power. Michigan gets some wins actually but can’t finish, and then RB does really well to get skinny and north/south pic.twitter.com/njdeOGbnND

Free access RPO. Get a FIRE Zone tip, confirm the safety rotation, go to work pic.twitter.com/BE2pzvBwd6

Good design from Georgia here attacking Michigan’s 3-4 from 13 personnel. Get the outside LB on the out and up and a CB not as comfortable playing deep half pic.twitter.com/aBCb1gb7tD

First time we see empty 4x1 with the RB wide of the condensed bunch pic.twitter.com/HX2t69AwhG

Good job defending Duo here pic.twitter.com/9rgpLerEuW

Great use of breaking out of sugar huddle in a sprint into a unique unbalanced formation. Michigan sees the unbalanced but doesn’t communicate assignments and UGA forces a bust pic.twitter.com/drSEBVsM47

Michigan goes 13 Personnel, Power O Bonus PAP with the pulling guard. Push the FB vertical. In my opinion, UGA plays this relatively well so it isn’t wide open, but Michigan has what they want. Have to pull the trigger here and put the ball into the open grass pic.twitter.com/BwOPwiTKAW

Really good use of breaking personnel tendency here. Lock UGA in Cover 1, get a 2 for 1 block, and catch the LB getting greedy on the fold. A win vs the FS away from a TD. Really good tackle by the FS pic.twitter.com/SqYt50KTIN

Look man. This play looks great on paper. Fastest RB on a swing screen with the MIKE trailing vs Cover 3. Most teams just don’t this type of speed to hold this to 3 yards pic.twitter.com/CqHGKGOlla

Want to focus a little more on the run, because on a white board this looks great for Michigan. Michigan dominating the chalk wars here. Jimmies and Joes, guys, makes you look great when your interior DL does this to one of the top OLs in the country pic.twitter.com/uQfyjJ2biz

Did I do this right @pff_seth? pic.twitter.com/xGY6jYY7dz

Back to empty. UGA goes Cover 1 with the DE dropping into the underneath rat zone. Michigan does well enough to pick up the stunt. Got the match up they want. Tough to not execute on back to back plays that are there. Opportunity to keep in contact with Georgia pic.twitter.com/2ODjcOTJSX

Gotta be a bit frustrating for a DC. Defense is rotating before the motion because they know what’s coming. Perfect play call. Just don’t execute pic.twitter.com/rCtw0TNsFc

Good use of inverted TE-Wing to move the FSOLB away from the play and split block closer to backside. Either backside DE or more likely the BSILB bust when he doesn’t fall back pic.twitter.com/6aAMcyy4nF

4 into the boundary vs Cover 3. For a defense, it feels like you have a half dozen receivers out there. Scrambling with UGA use of tempo, and coverage just breaks down. Eyes in all the wrong places at the LB level pic.twitter.com/K8Rs4HVKv2

Pony personnel from UGA. Michigan tries to pull a UGA and force a false start with a “MOVE” call. Shifts from even to Mint. Great job by the Ni LB on the edge to stop the screen pic.twitter.com/G9kvxXq7dN

Sugar huddle into a very unique unbalanced formation. Interesting short yardage wrinkle pic.twitter.com/IMFwaUkCL3

I like the little details that UGA employs here though, such that the TE aligns at a depth you would expect a LT (head thru belt of C) while Tackle Over aligns all the way up on the LOS like a TE would. Attention to detail there

LG make me laugh more than it should. Reminds me of 2020 Bama when you could tell presnap like 80% of the time when one of their guards was pulling and they just didn’t care because they’d kill you with run or RPO
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) January 7, 2022
Michigan goes with their fake jet split zone. Same play that created an explosive vs Iowa. But you see how Georgia just doesn’t take the bait at all. OL blocks well, want a little more from the H. But only 4 yards pic.twitter.com/5lWUvnhdKL

@PhillyWannabGM @CoachVass @CoachAdamGaylor think this is dent with defensive back spill support? Condensed WR so think some form of cloud
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) January 10, 2022
Downside of condensed bunch, hard to identify pressure schemes, and sometimes that forces the ball out early. But there are hints, and it widens the OLB. So I would like Michigan to check the coverage opposite. Could be 6! But still, great anticipation by QB here pic.twitter.com/Sh1j1XwIAv

Hard PAP with a puller again. Design is good. Influence the 2 high safety down to the added kick out block and puller, except…UGA just doesn’t care. Front will handle it. Great job by this safety passing off the deep over too. Everything covered pic.twitter.com/8V3mgiVO88

See the protection is called to the "M". As soon as the WILL stems to the LOS, they should FAN to the immediate edge threat. LT does, LG continues to work his combo on the NT though because stem is late. Nominally, you want to work to "M", because Rail is a good HOT route anyway pic.twitter.com/md42ZGSVTz

Nice job by Michigan here baiting the pre snap relief read. OLB basically drops right into the now screen. Relatively easy TFL in limited space, opportunity for a turnover even pic.twitter.com/QgKsJXgr2m
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) January 10, 2022
Almost every trap pass I’ve scouted this year was out of 2x2, likely for this reason. Wonder if Michigan playing so much Cone weak influenced this
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) January 10, 2022
Light box look trying to bait the run. MIKE does well on his plug, but Michigan can’t finish the play pic.twitter.com/OC4RXk4vmi

Successfully defend Leak! Sometimes it’s not your day, that’s confirmed when you defend leak and the offense picks up 20 yards on the scramble pic.twitter.com/R5OPgs5gqZ

Michigan forces a FG try. Nice little Cover 1 sim pressure. OLBs get around the ends. Drop, but would have been short anyway pic.twitter.com/2QCmbckhi7
