Film Review: Michigan vs Georgia, CFP Semi-Final, 2021 Season - Part 2
I breakdown interesting plays - schematically, technically, and from and execution standpoint - from the 2021 Michigan vs Georgia CFP semi-final game.
Stretch from Michigan. Anticipated this after the SECCG. From a technical standpoint, it’s actually pretty well blocked. But the C gets held up by the NT and senses a LB run through, which causes a miscommunication between C and LG pic.twitter.com/X83Kziox35

Nice job feeling the Georgia creeper pressure as they rotate to C3 Buzz. Quicks into pressure. Non-quicks away from rotation pic.twitter.com/wYTFkt4cez

Michigan wedge blocking. Relied on this a bunch in short yardage this year. Really started extending the edge later in the year. Zone to the middle. I thought this was going to be a bigger situation coming into the game pic.twitter.com/g2tplu4I1E

Three verts. Georgia in a rare cover 1 look and CB just gets burned on the outside pic.twitter.com/cc5sPdDhLd

Michigan loved gadget plays from this position. Do everything to sell run and UGA just doesn’t bite. 2 play fakes and a pulling G and the LB still carries the vertical. Then the G pull makes picking up the backside game extremely difficult pic.twitter.com/srSv31incs

Right back to gadget plays and Georgia just doesn’t bite. 5 strong fake swing, fake tunnel, bluff and Go. UGA does end up busting underneath, but pressure gets home with Fire Zone. But you can see formationally how it messes with UGA zones at the end pic.twitter.com/2F7lsoPsWs

This was a bit of a limitation for Michigan defensively. Their OLBs were much more on the DE side of the spectrum, which to pressure from 2-high shell almost always put fire zones. Getting more to LB side of spectrum will let them drop the LB and run standard coverages behind

Cool use of sugar huddle to hide the second RB. Jet sweep attached to T-Lead action. Michigan does really well to set the edge. But I like design and use of sugar huddle here pic.twitter.com/wE3WcSzIGQ

Rip/Liz from Michigan. Good job pushing the wheel route. Get a little into how you can use motion into stack/bunch to diagnose coverage. Overall, well defended. Force another kick pic.twitter.com/prPwgLoSgx

The issue for Michigan dealing with Georgia’s speed at LB. No reason this isn’t a cheap 6 or 7 yard gain. MA turns it into a 1 yard gain pic.twitter.com/WrKMOo88o8

Here is Philly Oscar with Fire Zone behind it. The SAM and Jack drop to Wall crossers and defend the flat (W/F on the diagram) pic.twitter.com/4hvXMO83JK

Think it is Jags. Philly and places are firezones. Oscar is just how they adjust to two removed open pic.twitter.com/CzoZBwOgNN

Cool little Cover 1 Sim Pressure from Michigan. Drop the FS down in the box at the snap, ensure the RB on LB match up, rotate into Cover 1. QB is sped up and feels he has to release on the Go route now pic.twitter.com/6j5for66OE
This is a subtle thing from UGA, but I love this TE-RB shift from 2x2 into 4 threats into the boundary. UGA likes running into the boundary, forces D communication. UM holds it down, but this is just a well executed 5ish yard run pic.twitter.com/HXQxHkh23a

Often overlooked aspect of Hutch’s game. Really think he can be a strong inside-outside guy. Think he can add more mass and model his game more off JJ Watt than the Bosas. IMO that’s more what he brings to the table for NFL teams pic.twitter.com/fpHjyfg8v3

I would like All here to work to the safety instead of blocking the CB. It's a tough read, because the CB doesn't immediately bail. But the safety is much more likely to be in the fit and I'd much rather have CB on the edge vs RB with how far down safety is

Hungry hungry hippo. I’ll keep calling Davis a hippo until it latches on pic.twitter.com/tGVQeW7HCP

Michigan had a chance for an explosive on the rail route in the first half, they go back to it here with FIB and get a nice gain.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) March 31, 2022
Orbit away from FIB really stresses the D as far as covering space vs covering numbers pic.twitter.com/mgTYYjV7NB
Georgia stems even front to odd, then post snap slants another gap over. All told, really hard on the protection to pick it up, especially with the puller. Have the post open too pic.twitter.com/ZyzXLI5Vzn

A-Decide + Z-Shock.

Concept exists in Moorhead playbook, Locksley playbook, and Roman playbook. RB open on the option route, gotta be a completion with a chance to turn it up pic.twitter.com/XC92hbqYLi
Great job blocking the Chop Blitz from UGA on Counter CH.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) March 31, 2022
C IDs DE go inside, looks for defender replacing, kicks CB wide.
RT stays patient and square and washes down the end.
UGA wants to spill and overlap, but UM OL has created a huge hole and RB can break tackle pic.twitter.com/pi7eTCOTBX
Get a great example of arm over swim, and ricochet by the DT on the left. And lock and shrug (push and pull) by the DT on the right. pic.twitter.com/Oeorpu0RdH

I think I clipped every Michigan Y-Delay this year, so finishing it off. This time with the fake check with me pic.twitter.com/7Bzs2WM2HO

FIB pin and pull back to the nub side. Love it. About as easy 5 yard run as you’ll get vs UGA, in a single high look too (ran a lot more 2nd half single high) pic.twitter.com/Zgz42aBYQ3

Michigan shows tendencies of Cover 1 presnap and drops into Tampa 2 with the safety as the deep hole player pic.twitter.com/SjMwQbYfGP
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) May 6, 2022
First time I recall this Y delay from empty being with this route structure around it. Hits the alert on the single side of 4x1 pic.twitter.com/66XSPkgd5l

UGA goes Cover 1 Key. Great call vs split zone type looks.
— Space Coyote (@SpaceCoyoteBDS) May 6, 2022
Really good example of Fit and Fold here as well pic.twitter.com/br0eD2EIgA
Michigan really liked this T-T stunt in the 2nd half of the year as a run stunt. Loop DT to the back behind the pin down of the DT away from the back. You can see from the above how the DT has a free hit on the RB and Ni pressure gets there. Generate 2 free hitters vs run
