Film Review: Minnesota Offense vs Ohio State Defense, 2021
A high level look at Minnesota Offense vs Ohio State Defense.
Game previously looked at in more detail here.
Hard to see hands but looks like we have some placement issues at C and 6th OL as well that could have sprung this

OSU LBs not falling back with the H and allowing the run to break out that way seems to be a harbinger of things to come pic.twitter.com/AT71lHfcYe

11 Personnel Duo. Watch the LT on his combo block. Rather than Gallop, he hops into his block. Keeps shoulders square, clears our feet to avoid issues with 5T, gets feet rooted and drives 3T to 2nd level pic.twitter.com/uvL2ZB1Dyv
BSG had nice stiff arm and climb to wash MIKE past plate. But BST a bit out of control with hand placement and body lean. 3-technique does great job feeling the overtake and getting skinny, swims the BST, and ultimately makes the play pic.twitter.com/Y69cj15GCi

Short motion Pop Out Duo. RB fake mesh point becomes lead blocker. Short motion extra kick blocker gets 2-for-1.
Great example of Gallop technique by RT pic.twitter.com/QdbI5NC7HU

Really nice job taking on double team by 92. Takes on center, controls, feels combo, gets upfield knee down, gets skinny, splits the blockers.

Split outside zone.
You see where midzone principles hurt them. Not aggressive with backside support. OT can’t lock out DE. Leaves playside LB with two guys on him when he goes to plug pic.twitter.com/0dIcbXuJFz

Empty middle screen. Center allows DT to cross face and then feels C try to throw him. Retraces back under the screen and almost gets an INT on a play that is otherwise well set up pic.twitter.com/5sCEbTNOyB

Insert Zone PAP. Such a simple concept vs man that’s effective if you can get the timing. Insert allows RT to hard set, which clears out inside support. Reduced split provides room to work the out pic.twitter.com/gmqMsIMOh4

OTs for Minnesota had a lot of trouble with the wide technique tilted DEs. Got beat inside regularly on zone plays. Paths too deep given tilt pic.twitter.com/kdzW3q7PnY

Busted communication in Cover 3. Either LB needs to work fast to flat and CB carry the vertical, or coverage needs a cloud check call and have CB trap the flat pic.twitter.com/zRDLVyUIQ1

Inside Zone away from 2 bonus OL. Think RB cuts this back knowing where combo is and beef. Can still work if outside Wing pushes the point man through to the 2nd level. But Center works real hard to torque the nose and give a butt, would like RB to take it pic.twitter.com/DxBpJsMRQ6

LT’s first step needs to be deeper. Comes out flat and no way he’s going to be able to cutoff the inside shade pic.twitter.com/uD9TUPXtGv

OSU goes either Cover 1 Peel or Green Dogs the LB. Either C or more likely, RB has the protection wrong. Both on the left ILB. Right ILB gets free run at QB pic.twitter.com/XiHVq8F84I

Ohio St responds to 7 OL with a 5 man front trying to eliminate combo blocks. Not gonna work when your Nose and MIKE stick their helmet in the same gap pic.twitter.com/2zSCu1e0BS

CB pressure from the boundary. Think 92 had the call wrong (he’s slanting like a field pressure). Minnesota hits the front door pic.twitter.com/KEjeMkthrO

Minnesota is very much a two hand steering wheel blocking team. Tries to take a shallow set (A angle) to sell run and get out to wide DE. Problem is when you go against long DE that they can get that long arm into your body and dip and get around corner pic.twitter.com/uGzU0IXlRs

33 is a talented FR but still a FR DE not used to playing on the interior. Watch him take on the double compared to earlier. Keeps his body exposed to 2nd in combo. Inside knee stays high. When he starts getting pushed he tries to walk back to leverage instead of hop out pic.twitter.com/gZ2VCc383t

I’ve seen some rough footwork by Minnesota RT, and his bend is inconsistent, but you see in his length and size his upside. Watch him miss and assignment here but just kind of rag doll a guy into being a bowling ball pic.twitter.com/txHmHOMucS
I think if you have 5 DL and one guy at LB depth, and you're playing cover 1, you should probably box the kickout block.

Pretty decent example of gallop technique from the RT. Raises up a little too high, which makes that second step a little late, but you can see him “rock the baby” a bit to get momentum on his two hand under pic.twitter.com/jiXNAUBIEe
