Film Review: PSU O vs Wisconsin D, 2021
A high level look at Penn State Offense vs Wisconsin Defense, 2021.
“Favre 3” from Wisconsin?

Pretty simple sim pressure. But MIKE looping outside the OLB causes a coverage breakdown. Love have two guys drop into underneath zones on 3rd and 6 given how PSU tends to attack in those situations pic.twitter.com/qAapj2AU1l

PSU goes empty, motion FIB. Screen-Pass Option. UW runs cover 3 and blockers not on the same page. Inside blocker senses CB dropping deep 1/3 so takes LB. Outside blocker should work to flat defender but is stuck on CB pic.twitter.com/lCe2F4FIjp

Sail concept. Great googly-moogly look at this route by WR3. Sell the bang 8 hard and then sink the hips and break back on the corner pic.twitter.com/USKEseKEwF
The backside of the defense changes the outcome of this play from a 20 yard gain to a 3 yard gain

What is this? 6 man protection vs 4 man rush. Blocks no one. And OL only ones trying to run screen?
This is play 11 and PSU QB has been hit about 5 times. PSU has run the ball 3 times and I think run 3 quick WR screens pic.twitter.com/S3ubMtXx2j

Reading the Odd Front DE on the bash read. Wisconsin also blitzes from that side which gets through unblocked and speeds up the QB, otherwise they have a nice setup for a solid gain pic.twitter.com/xf0nPs57bg

LG is in a hurry to get vertical. With D alignment and LB stem, this needs to be 3-man combo with LT-LG-C. Given Wisconsin tendency to spike their OLB and the stem, I’d tell the LG not to engage 2i at all. But even if you do, you have to work flat. Your target isn’t vertical pic.twitter.com/SlS7dr9dfr
He’s in such a hurry to try to pin the hip of the 2i. But in his rush, he’s lost balance, he lunges, he’s lost his depth.

There are different approaches here, but that 2nd step needs back in the ground quicker so he can keep his base and stay square.
In my option, you need the ability to pin that DT inside. Whether that’s the OG or OT can depend on your rules. But it’s too obvious for any DT looper to retrace out to screen. And D isn’t playing without contain player, so releasing all 3 doesn’t make sense to me

So that’s about 10 minutes discussing one 3rd and 8 incompletion. Could probably go a few more on technique, but thought it was an interesting look at two competing calls

Hard to see on screen grab, but there is some really nice subtlety in WR5’s route too.

Raises his head a bit, before turning on burners to get CB running on vertical, then dips under through the CB blind spot to get open on the post

Screen-Pass option. PSU does a lot of nice work with their screens into the boundary from FIB. Here is quads to the boundary. Confirm coverage rotation and throw opposite pic.twitter.com/wiFbk8Gxj7

Interesting use of switch release to effectively run slot fade.
#3 verts. Often see outside WR to boundary run a come back. Don’t think this is 4 verts based on width of boundary vertical at numbers. Think it’s intention smash concept. Comeback holds the CB in single high pic.twitter.com/7MPO88wjbS

Cleo 3 (8 man Cloud Cover 3) I think. Unique odd front pressure. Wisconsin has kept the boundary side edge soft a lot in pass downs (contain working from inside out). Here, NT picks the LT hard and DE loops. Really trying to flush QB that way pic.twitter.com/A356kGQsNK

Outside Zone Lock Screen RPO
Interesting that they are locking on a screen RPO but with only 5 box players why not. RG doesn’t really ID his target and therefore NT left unblocked when MIKE plugs and C takes him. pic.twitter.com/dYI19HeONb

PSU got an absurd number of free yards off this FIB Now RPO.

A lot of switch release from PSU in this game. This turns into what is effectively mesh, but intent is the fake switch release toward the bottom of the screen pic.twitter.com/YiDT5R7Z4k

PSU runs Duo. Playside combo never gets movement or comes off, as DE does really well to engage and hold LG. MIKE ball reads and fits when RB bends path back pic.twitter.com/oiZUVNtsxP

Screen Bluff and Go. See a lot more of this with #1 running a quasi-post and #3 basically a delayed wheel. This one gets the first vertical open pic.twitter.com/2DlEKJuCBE

Now Screen Bluff and Go.
Interesting watching PSU a few times this year that they go back to the bluff and go right away really often. I like the idea because “who does it twice in a row?” But the answer is PSU quite often actually pic.twitter.com/aYAPYEtzSx

Penn St is working the switch release sequencing in this one. Here, they get into switch release scissors and the corner is open. Pressure results in throwing the check down early pic.twitter.com/63EpSjNAPq

Nice idea to go from empty to 11 Counter OH. One thing you need to teach players when you run all this motion though is to SLOW DOWN. Guys tend to get sped up in their processing with motion. LB here actually gets hat on wrong side of wrap block. RB has chance 1v1 on FS pic.twitter.com/OW9XQjtc9n
